he 2014 GHX Healthcare Supply Chain Summit will provide a wide variety of programs focused on how healthcare can collectively accelerate value from unique device identification (UDI) and other global data standards. The standards-related sessions begin with the Supplier UDI Initiatives and the Global Standards Considerations Leadership Workshop, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. ET. Session attendees will hear directly from medical device manufacturers that are well on their way to UDI compliance, which includes assigning and labeling their products with UDIs and providing additional data on those products to the FDA Global UDI Database (GUDID). The manufacturers and other industry experts will discuss what to expect with UDI initiatives, including: timelines, challenges and lessons learned, and special considerations for global suppliers. In addition, industry experts will provide insights into conforming amendments designed to incorporate UDIs into a wide variety of FDA programs related to the approval and surveillance of medical devices.
The Global Data Standards Users Group will hold its annual in-person meeting from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. ET. In this meeting, participants will explore how manufacturers can go beyond regulatory compliance and use UDI as an opportunity to derive measurable value from better management of master data for both internal operations and customer service. Covidien will join GHX in discussing how manufacturers can efficiently publish data to both regulatory databases and customers. Lean and Six Sigma expert Doug Sabotin from Columbus Regional Hospital will introduce tools that providers can use to effectively incorporate UDI into both processes and systems.

In this session from 3:45 p.m. – 5 p.m. ET, GS1’s MJ Wylie will provide a global view of the value standards can deliver in healthcare, followed by an interactive discussion on what hospitals and healthcare delivery systems are doing to integrate standards into their operations in the North American market and why.
What’s Happening at the Intersection of EMR and ERP?
In a breakout session from 2:00 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. ET, hospital representatives from Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System and Piedmont Healthcare will focus on the role of global data standards in maximizing return on investment from implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) and electronic medical records systems. With hospitals facing potential requirements to capture UDIs in electronic medical records, better integration and interoperability between these and other technology systems will be critical to achieving accurate and timely data about the products purchased and used in patient care.

The Summit’s final day kicks off at 8 a.m. ET with a presentation titled From Regulation to Value: Accelerating Product Data Visibility Across the Community, featuring two organizations that recognized the value of global data standards long before market or regulatory demands for their use.
